Three young Germans came out to South Africa more than a hundred years ago to seek their fortune: the brothers George and Leopold Albu, and the mining engineer Adolf Goerz. They were to found, respectively, General Mining and Finance Corporation – the two companies which would eventually become Gencor, South Africa’s second largest business group, which has today become one of the world’s most important mining houses.
But the Albu brothers and Goerz have been the least recorded of the “Randlords” who created modern South Africa at the turn of the century. In comparison with Rhodes, Barnato, Beit and the rest, the Albus have been forgotten. This is their story.
