Description
People in search of a general account of the history of the region will find this book attractive and readable. Professor Omer-Cooper has updated the second edition to incorporate recent advances in scholarship. The most substantial changes focus on: the early history, settlement and relationships of the Khoisan and Bantu-speaking peoples; the causation and course of the nineteenth-century Mfecane, which was originally detailed in the author’s book The Zulu Aftermath; the recent history of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland and newly independent Namibia; the final phase of apartheid from 1986 to 2 February 1990; the negotiations to establish a transitional regime, to hold all-race elections for a constituent assembly with authority to establish a new constitution.
This has proved to be the most teachable history of the region available.
